Alzheimers Disease Research

The purpose of Alzheimers disease treatment is to improve the function of brain cells for as long as possible. The disease primarily destroys the neurons that control the body and mind. These changes in the brain and cortex have profound affects on the ability to speak and remember. Many people with the disease also have a hard time controlling their emotions and cannot make decisions. Alzheimer’s is classified as a dementia, which is a disease that affects cognition. There are several causes of dementia that affect people as they age.

Alzheimers disease research has focused on the role of the tau protein and neurofibrillary tangle in the development of the disease. The protein collects in the cells and effectively destroys most of the machinery of the cells. This causes a great deal of problems with normal cell functions, such as repair and message transmission. If there were only a few cells with the problem, then the organism would be able to function. But according to Alzheimers disease research, most of the cortical neurons begin to experience this level of change and start to have severe dysfunction. There is no known cure for this process of protein collection and subsquent neuronal cell death. Thus far the various treatments of this process have not been very effective.

Because of the collections of proteins resulting in abnormal neuronal transmission, the disease starts to affect cognition. The cells and the brain are no longer able to process and store new information. This means that people are unable to learn new things. The deficits also being to take a toll on the recall ability. Most patients with alzheimers disease symptoms are unable to recall key facts that have recently occured. That is a key component of Alzheimers. Usually, people will be able to remember things that happened a long time ago. Alzheimers does not take those memories away. What it does do is prevent the new memories from being formed and retained.

Most of the focus on Alzheimers is to help people maintain a quality of life as the symptoms and problems get worse. There are certain medications that can help with this and have been shown to help people care for themselves. Many people want to avoid becoming a burden for their family or have to be admitted to a nursing home. Many Alzheimers patients want nothing more than to stay in their own homes and get the care they need. Alzheimers and other forms of dementia are chronic and progressive diseases that are fatal. At some point the disease with take their life. But people should try to have the best quality of life that is possible before complications arise. Alzheimers disease treatment can help with this and other problems.
